"Overall ‘Any Moment’ is a dynamic compilation of songs with brilliant, emotive and relatable storytelling. The album covers the fun, up-beat nature of life with the juxtaposition of everyday obstacles that ordinary people face.
The collection of songs flows beautifully jumping from one story to the next with extraordinary performances from the best in Australian musical theatre. This is a moving body of work that will no doubt evolve into a smash musical, that not only theatre lovers will connect to, but a lot of music enthusiasts too.

“Any Moment a new musical by Bradley McCaw” The Concept Recording, is a new work from award winning writer/performer and emerging composer Bradley McCaw. Set over the course of 24 hours, the work begins at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and moves throughout a single town, hearing stories from various individuals as the clock tumbles toward a New Year. Its inspiration from the famous John Lennon quote, ‘Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans’ is clear in this narrative premise and through-line exploration of what a minute in time truly represents.
It starts as we meet four strangers; a young man running away from home, a woman at a party, a truck driver heading home to his family and a new mother with her crying child in the cresendoing ‘Twenty More Till’, which tantalises with suggestion of the spectacle that sets great opening musical numbers apart from the humdrumness of others.
The recording is inspired by hit musicals like “Songs for A New World,” and “Closer Than Ever,” and the musical influence is seen across the familiar feel of its 11-song soundtrack. There is humour too, in, for example, ‘My Phone’, in which two strangers (Judy Hainsworth & Shaun Kohlman) sing about their most prominent personal relationship and Emily Kristopher’s cute rendition of the bright and breezy ‘Rovers Song’, in which she sings as a young girl explaining her parents impending divorce, to her dog.
It is the ‘big’ numbers, however, that are the most memorable especially in their feature of performances by some of the finest performers from our musical theatre stages. Kurt Phelan implores his character to move on, as his ex gets married at the Church across town in ‘A Church on Murphy Street’, a tender, emotional highlight, that is both sentimental and soaring. And Lizzie Moore is exhilarating in sassy Sutton Foster-esque vocal presence in the final song, ‘Hard to Keep a Good Girl Down’, in which a woman unpacks the ending of her marriage.
Across its track listing, “Any Moment a new musical by Bradley McCaw” The Concept Recording features much variety and many musical highlights dependent upon personal preferences. While the recording aims to not showcase a Complete Final Musical Theatre work, it provides us with enough hint as to what “Any Moment” could be, to only want more. Lucky Melbournians will get the exclusive first look at the new work in celebration of its release at Chapel off Chapel this June as part of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival.

MUSICAL THEATRE REVIEW (UK)
Highlights From Becoming Bill by Bradley McCaw is a new musical theatre recording featuring performances by some of Australia’s finest performers.
Bill’s life is going nowhere. Sure, he is stuck in a dead-end job and his family life is frustrating, but things could be worse… Right?
Okay sure, his brother James hasn’t left the couch in four days and his girlfriend Kimberly has broken up with him four times over the past three years, the last of which was last week!
Yes, his mother Jane won’t stop looking through old picture albums and talking of the past. Doesn’t she understand, Bill doesn’t want to remember his childhood? He doesn’t care that he grew up without father and they were poor and unhappy. He just wants to get on with his life.
When Bill gets a phone call from a theatre company asking him to write a new musical for an upcoming season, he struggles to find any inspiration.
Ultimately deciding to base it upon his real life and family, he unknowingly disturbs the fragile space between them. As Bill searches for something ‘interesting’ to write about, he discovers their lives are not as simple and dull as they first appeared.
That is the synopsis to this specially commissioned musical which won the 2016 New Musicals Australia Snapshot Award.
The recording features performances by Peter Cousens (Chris on the original international symphonic recording of Miss Saigon), Natalie O’Donnell (currently touring Australia with Mamma Mia!), Kathryn McIntyre (Ladies in Black, national tour of Australia), Tom Oliver (international tour with Velvet and Marcia Hines) and Bradley McCaw (international tours with The Ten Tenors).
It is always very satisfying to know that there is talent out there writing new material and pushing the boundaries in musical theatre.
You can tell from listening to this highlights album that Bradley McCaw has a great future ahead of him, not only as a superb vocalist but also with excellent writing talent.
The highlights only show a little of what this piece is capable of and I do wish that the rest of the tracks had been included, as these eight musical numbers leave you wanting more.
Who knows… maybe we will get the chance to hear the complete musical one of these days.

A generous touch of the larrikin, Bradley McCaw reminds me of a cheeky John Farnham with a pinch of Elton John and rather oddly, a taste of The Whitlams (it’s the piano perhaps). On September 19, the former Ten Tenors crooner gathered a buzzing crowd around him at Brisbane’s funky new Jazz joint The Doo Bop Bar to launch ‘Highlights from Becoming Bill’, a studio album featuring fine Australian performers such as Peter Cousens, Natalie O’Donnell, Kathryn McIntyre and Tom Oliver. The collective is tasked with giving tonsil-time to McCaw’s acclaimed 2010 musical-in-progress ‘Becoming Bill’.
Bradley would charm the socks off your mother and easily works the crowd, egging them on for sign-a-long choruses and as the star performer, he is also very generous with praise of his cast. The pieces are reminiscent of contemporary musical classics such as Rent (in particular ‘Let’s Not Have This Fight’ performed by Kathryn McIntyre). McIntyre’s (Ladies in Black) effortless vocal range wallpapers the room with her dusty notes. ‘Becoming Bill’ is based around the life of Bill (Bradley McCaw), a 25-year-old struggling actor who can’t seem to get his life together. The audience meets Bill five years into his difficult relationship with Kimberley (played by McIntyre).
McCaw has some impressive runs on the board, playing alongside such names as Bernard Fanning and Pete Murray and performing leads in productions such as Miss Saigon and Sweeney Todd but he obviously gets a real kick out of writing his own material and delivering his stories to a room full of new friends.
To listen to some of the performers or to find out more about the show (or purchase the album) head to McCaw’s website www.bradleymccaw.com and keep your eyes peeled on social media for upcoming events. Hopefully, we’ll see the full musical on stage soon!
